i danced my little heart out.

This song, Mighty Love (Instrumental,) is pumping up my weekend/trip to New Hampshire to see The Rose. Thank you Pryda AKA Eric Prydz. I hope to keep discovering gems on this album all weekend. So far I also love “2Night” and “Mirage” and want to choreograph a ballet using some of these tracks!

“Michael + Bubbles”
I am working on a new creation for the Girl Walk // All Day screening at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art on August 4th and although it is in the early stages, I think I have come up with the concept, costume and title.
While in Mexico City in April, we passed by an exhibit highlighting Michael Jackson’s costumes at the Diego Rivera Studio (it was closed that day) but the poster gave me an idea. I want to make a bodysuit that has the lines and details of a typical Michael Jackson outfit drawn onto it… For this piece I am also taking inspiration from one of my favorite sculptures, Jeff Koons 1988 work “Michael Jackson and Bubbles” which lives at the SF MOMA.
The challenge will be casting a small person in Massachusetts to be Bubbles…

girlwalkallday:

Last Sunday, before our screening at the Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporareo (MUAC) in Mexico City, John taught an outdoor dance class in the square outside the theater. Though there were many people bustling about for the Telmex HUB conference, the class was impromptu and took the crowd by surprise. John invited anyone and everyone to join in, and within 20 minutes, had a good-sized crowd dancing to J-Lo. That’s how we do it!

THE GRIND (playlist)

Recent shots from Mexico trip… I always love knowing @youngna (park) is documenting with her great stills… i think this video could be sick

girlwalkallday:

A few (non-conference) snapshots from Mexico City! We had our big screening today (a blast!) along with a killer public dance lesson by John Doyle and will give a free workshop at the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporaneo’s Agora room tomorrow (Monday, 4/23) at noon. When not at the conference, we’ve been trying some of the city’s finest mezcal and shooting John dancing in the barrios, markets and streets of the city. It’s been a total blast. More photos + full recap soon!

The story Lara Logan shares here is beyond profound… DO NOT pass this 60 Minutes segment by, but watch when you are ready for an emotional experience.

For her heroic struggles shared with great dignity here, I dedicate my creation, “Anna & Her Body” to Lara Logan.

I am honored to be performing my new dance installation, “Anna & Her Body,” featuring a costume hand-painted by Jane Lafarge Hamill, at the world renowned Brooklyn Museum on Saturday April 7, 2012. While I have been studying dance for years, my goal has been to take my passion for this medium to art spaces, museums and galleries rather than dance venues or dance concerts. To have the opportunity to do this at such a prestigious venue next to exhibits as profound as Keith Haring (78-82) is a massive honor. I aspire to develop as a professional artist, not a professional dancer and this piece calls on ZERO of my technical training as a dancer and is purely a visual experience. It’s an experiment, so while I can map out what might happen, I can only hope and pray that my expectations are exceeded by spontaneity of the space, the moment and the audience.

The piece is between 6 an 8 minutes long and will talk place in the Beaux-Arts Court on the third floor of the museum around 5:45pm. There will be a screening of“Girl Walk // All Day” at 6pm in the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium which is right beside the Beaux-Arts Court. The entire day at the museum is free as part ofTarget First Saturdays and includes a party hosted by DJ Junior Vasquez in honor of the exhibit of his friend Keith Haring’s work which is currently on view at the museum.

This creation began as a fantasy of mine to dance inside one of Jane Lafarge Hamill’s paintings. http://janelafargehamill.com/
I imagined being in her gallery beneath a white sheet which is pulled back to reveal her latest masterpiece. As she is a master of the female form, I spent a lot of time thinking about the female body and chose two women whose bodies played a pivotal role in their lives. The first was Anna Nicole Smith. Her entire biographyis captivating, but I was especially touched by the harm her body suffered. The irony was that her body was her money-maker, yet she abused the shit out of it and eventually it gave up on her. Later I saw the 60-Minutes piece on Lara Logan’s tragic episode in Egypt’s Tahrir Square. I knew immediately that I wanted to make a creation dedicated to her struggle there, and decided that her ability to detach mind from body during the ordeal was not unlike Anna Nicole’s willingness to numb herself to death. You can see Lara’s story here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bO12X1nhzzk.

I can’t be sure how much of this will come through during the performance, but as I go through the piece, I hope to detach from my body. The painting Jane has created for the piece is stunning and totally delicate. There is no doubt that you will see this painting suffer some damage by the time the piece concludes and watching the painting suffer this damage is likened to watching Anna Nicole self-destruct or Lara Logan be tortured.

If you’ve been wanting to take a dance class, John Doyle’s Hip-Hop for Beginners are — take our word — fun, sweaty and a damn good time. See below for updates on his upcoming class schedule.
Here are the class descriptions, in John’s own words:
Announcing New Course: 70s, 80s & 90s GrooveThis course is a two-session program in April with excellent party tracks from late 70s - mid 80s and the 90s.When you sign up for both sessions you will receive a discounted price on my regular classes and I will repeat choreography elements in both sessions so you can feel yourself “getting the hang of it” and improving on the technique. More info here: http://tinyurl.com/73e8futYou can also sign up for the classes individually on my regular class page. They will appear as my regularly listed class “Hip-Hop for Beginners” http://skl.sh/nILsxxFLASHBACK - April 15 (70s & 80s) Long before hip-hop music was defined by the mega stars we hear today, hip-hop dance was flourishing. Disco, Funk and R&B sounds were a common soundtrack to hip-hop movement. This class will feature the sounds of Chic, Chaka Khan, Kano and others. There will be a 2 minute lecture on Soul Train and the significant role it played in the development of hip-hop dance styles.THE GRIND - April 29 (90s) MTV’s The Grind left a lasting impression on my adolescent psyche… the music, the dancers, the clothes, the movement! This class will pay tribute the bouncing, bumping, winding, grinding celebration of awesomeness and 90s that was MTV’s The Grind. And the music alone will make you sweat… Bizzare Inc feat. Angie Brown, Black Box, Haddaway and More! http://youtu.be/QxoaH_I8vZM
